VICTORIA, Fla. — The U. S. Food and Drug Administration has approved a new drug for erectile dysfunction that has been approved only by doctors’ approval.
The drug, known by its brand name Viagra, will be approved for sale in Florida under the trade name “Sildenafil,” the FDA’s new drug label says. The Food and Drug Administration will allow men who are unable to get an erection and men who have had two or more failed attempts at achieving an erection in the past year to receive the drug, said FDA officials.
Viagra, which is sold by Cialis, works in the penis by relaxing muscles, and is used to treat erectile dysfunction in men. However, the drug’s safety has been questioned by some people. One study in 2012 found that taking sildenafil had a small increased risk of stroke, a risk that may not have been enough to put men on a higher dose.
Viagra’s safety was also under-reported. According to a, the safety of sildenafil has not been fully established. However, the drug has been prescribed to some men and is used in some cases to treat erectile dysfunction in men.
Dr. Sidney Wolfe, director of the Center for Drug Evaluation and Research at the FDA’s health center in Bethesda, Maryland, said the FDA has studied and concluded that sildenafil may be an effective treatment for erectile dysfunction and a potentially safer option for those who do not respond well to other therapies.
“We’ve been studying a number of things and we know that there are side effects of sildenafil in some patients,” said Wolfe, director of the Center for Drug Evaluation and Research in Washington, D. C., which is a government agency responsible for evaluating drug safety.
The FDA had recommended that Viagra be approved only by doctors’ approval.
Steven Nissen, the FDA’s deputy assistant commissioner for medical affairs, said Viagra was approved in 1998 and that men with ED should be screened for other ED issues.
“It’s very important that they’re screened because it can be dangerous if you don’t have symptoms, and a lot of men don’t have any symptoms,” said Nissen, who was not involved in the study.
Nissen said the FDA did not recommend that men take Viagra to treat ED, although it had found some men had ED, such as those with a history of heart problems or blood disorders, and the drugs had been associated with a rare and potentially fatal condition called priapism, which is a prolonged and painful erection that can result in permanent damage to the penis.
He said the agency also said that Viagra should not be used in patients who are at risk of a heart attack, a stroke or other cardiac conditions.
“We think that there are several reasons for the safety and effectiveness of sildenafil,” said Nissen. “But the most important thing is to look at all the possible side effects that could be caused by the drug.”
In the past, Viagra was approved for men with erectile dysfunction only in men who had the problem, but not in men who had been taking it for a while.
In 2003, the FDA approved sildenafil for use as a treatment for pulmonary hypertension.
The FDA’s safety panel recommended that men who are taking sildenafil be prescribed the drug for as long as they can be bothered.
“We think that sildenafil may be an effective treatment for erectile dysfunction,” said Nissen. “We’re not trying to make any claims about Viagra, but we do have some concerns about the safety of this drug.”
In 2003, the FDA began testing sildenafil for other uses, including heart problems. In 2004, the FDA approved sildenafil for men with low blood pressure and angina, and for men with erectile dysfunction. In May 2012, the FDA approved the drug for use as a treatment for pulmonary hypertension.
“It’s a long-term treatment,” said Nissen.
Viagra 50mg tablet contains an active component such as Sildenafil. This medication is used to treat erectile dysfunction (ED) in men. It contains the active ingredient sildenafil citrate, which belongs to a class of drugs called phosphodiesterase type 5 (PDE5) inhibitors. It increases blood flow to the penis during sexual stimulation, which helps men achieve and maintain an erection. Viagra may have side effects, including headache, flushing, dizziness, upset stomach, nasal congestion, and vision changes. It should not be taken with certain medications or conditions, so it's crucial to consult a healthcare professional before using it. Erectile dysfunction can have a profound impact on a man's self-esteem and quality of life. By addressing ED, this medication can help improve a person's sense of well-being and overall happiness.
Individuals with a history of cardiovascular diseases, such as heart problems (angina, heart failure, irregular heartbeats) or recent heart attack, should exercise caution when using Viagra. The sexual activity itself can strain the heart and can further increase the strain by increasing blood flow. Consult with a healthcare professional to assess the risks and benefits in such cases. This medication can cause a mild decrease in blood pressure. Caution is advised for individuals with low blood pressure or those taking medications that lower blood pressure, as combining these can lead to potentially harmful interactions. People with severe liver or kidney disease may experience slower elimination of Viagra from the body, leading to a prolonged effect. Dosage adjustments may be necessary in such cases.

SildenafilSildenafil, the active ingredient in Viagra, is classified as a PDE5 inhibitor, which means it stops the enzyme phosphodiesterase type 5 (PDE5) from taking more of an impact on the penis. This medication has been clinically proven to work well for men with ED, providing a relief and improving sexual performance. It is typically taken about 30 minutes to an hour before anticipated sexual activity, so it is important to follow the dosing instructions carefully. The effect of sildenafil can last up to 36 hours, making it ideal for treating erectile dysfunction. It is important to note that sildenafil should not be taken with any of the following medications: Alcohol, protease inhibitors, alpha-blockers, angiotensin-II receptor blockers, atazanavir, ritonavir, nevirapine, and sildenafil.
