VICTORIA, Fla. — The U. S. Food and Drug Administration has approved a new drug for erectile dysfunction that has been approved only by doctors’ approval.
The drug, known by its brand name Viagra, will be approved for sale in Florida under the trade name “Sildenafil,” the FDA’s new drug label says. The Food and Drug Administration will allow men who are unable to get an erection and men who have had two or more failed attempts at achieving an erection in the past year to receive the drug, said FDA officials.
Viagra, which is sold by Cialis, works in the penis by relaxing muscles, and is used to treat erectile dysfunction in men. However, the drug’s safety has been questioned by some people. “We’ve been studying a number of things and we know that there are side effects of sildenafil in some patients,” said Wolfe, director of the Center for Drug Evaluation and Research in Washington, D. C., which is a government agency responsible for evaluating drug safety.
The FDA had recommended that Viagra be approved only by doctors’ approval.
Steven Nissen, the FDA’s deputy assistant commissioner for medical affairs, said Viagra was approved in 1998 and that men with ED should be screened for other ED issues.
“It’s very important that they’re screened because it can be dangerous if you don’t have symptoms, and a lot of men don’t have any symptoms,” said Nissen, who was not involved in the study.
Nissen said the FDA did not recommend that men take Viagra to treat ED, although it had found some men had ED, such as those with a history of heart problems or blood disorders, and the drugs had been associated with a rare and potentially fatal condition called priapism, which is a prolonged and painful erection that can result in permanent damage to the penis.

“We think that there are several reasons for the safety and effectiveness of sildenafil,” said Nissen. “But the most important thing is to look at all the possible side effects that could be caused by the drug.”
In the past, Viagra was approved for men with erectile dysfunction only in men who had the problem, but not in men who had been taking it for a while.
In 2003, the FDA approved sildenafil for use as a treatment for pulmonary hypertension.
The FDA’s safety panel recommended that men who are taking sildenafil be prescribed the drug for as long as they can be bothered.
“We think that sildenafil may be an effective treatment for erectile dysfunction,” said Nissen. “We’re not trying to make any claims about Viagra, but we do have some concerns about the safety of this drug.”
